Mosquito Information

Fight the Bite!

Mosquitoes can carry serious, incurable diseases.

Cover up! Repel! Eliminate! to protect yourself and your family. 

The best way to significantly reduce your risk of contracting a mosquito-borne disease is to:

  • wear long, loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing
  • use an insect repellent containing either DEET or picaridin
  • eliminate potential mosquito breeding sites around your home.

We are expecting another wet summer this year, which means there may be more mosquitoes around, and potentially a higher-risk of mosquito-borne disease.  There is currently no vaccine and no cure for serious mosquito-borne diseases, which have been detected previously in South Australia including RRV, BFV, MVEV and WNV/KUN.  Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) has also recently been detected in South Australia.  Personal protection against mosquito bite and mosquito-borne disease is the only evidence-based measure known to prevent infection with a mosquito-borne disease such as RRV, BFV, MVEV or WNV/KUN.

How can you protect yourself?

Protect yourself against mosquito bites, by wearing long, loose fitting clothing; using insect repellent and eliminating the water the mosquitoes can breed in.
