Mundulla Common and Swamp Enjoyment & Enhancement Project Update

Mundulla Common & Swamp Enjoyment and Enhancement Project Update

Over the 2020 – 2021 year the Mundulla Common Working Group with the support of Tatiara District Council have worked together to deliver the Mundulla Common & Swamp Enjoyment and Enhancement Project.

With funding support from the Limestone Coast Landscape Board this project is delivering terrific outcomes in the areas of weed control, native grass seed collection and revegetation, and creation of plant signage for use along Mundulla Common and Moot Yang Gunya Swamp walking trails.

Weed Control Activities

Over the length of this project 225 Olives, 12 Dog Roses and introduced Acacia species were controlled helping to reduce further weed spread. An additional benefit of this project will be a Spring 2021 control program of introduced pasture grass species Phalaris and Cocksfoot within the Common. Although these species are welcome in agricultural grazing systems, they are highly competitive with native grasses and grassy woodland understorey species in this natural environment. Additional weeds to be treated in spring will include Bridal Creeper and Soursob.

Native Grasses Seed Collection and Revegetation

Another component of this project is the collection of native grasses and minimum disturbance hand seeding to be carried out over Spring 2021. Kangaroo Grass, Spear Grass and Common Wheat Grass seed have been collected from sites around Mundulla and Bordertown. This seed will be used for revegetation of post weed control sites in the Mundulla Common over Spring 2021.

Mundulla Common Plant Identification Signage

Plant signage was developed for use and installation by the Mundulla Common Working Group to place along Mundulla Common walking trails with the benefit of enhancing the experience of locals and visitors to the Mundulla Common and Moot Yang Gunya Swamp. This signage will improve knowledge of both the native and introduced weed species in the Common, and improve understanding of our unique local environment in the Tatiara.
